MODEL OF A LEOPARD
Meissen, ca. 1747-49. Model, probably by Johann Joachim Kändler and Peter Reinicke.
The pelt painted with black spots. Underglaze blue sword mark on the rear side of the base.
13.7 × 15.3 cm.
Minimally restored.
According to sources, J.G. Kirchner created a large leopard as early as 1733, which he had studied on the original in the Dresden Lion House and later realized in the form of a "bozzetto" (Wittwer 2004, pp. 113, 118). A smaller model that might correspond to the one on offer can be found in Reinicke's work reports of November 1747: "1 Leopard gefertiget und bouhsirt" (Kunze-Köllensperger 1999, p. 129).
Comparative items: Axel Guttmann Collection (M. Kunze-Köllensperger 1999, p. 70, No. 79); Ernst Schneider Collection (R. Rückert 1966, No. 1052 and R. Eikelmann, p. 382, No. 153); Sir Gawaine & Lady Baillie Collection (Sotheby's London, 1 May 2013, Lot No. 93).
