CUP AND SAUCER WITH "WACHTELDEKOR",

Meissen, c. 1735.
Of octagonal form, painted in Kakiemon style with a pair of quail flanked by a flowering prunus tree and Kikyô bush, brown edge lines. Cup with underglaze blue sword mark, incised mark II (cup), former's mark . . (saucer).
H 6 cm, D 13.3 cm.

Provenance: Private collection, Basel.

Cf. Julia Weber, Meissener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, vol. II, p. 312, there the note that the first of these cups were inventoried in 1731 in the Japanese Palace together with those which were confiscated in connection with the Lemaire affair with Graf Hoym (see inventory by Boltz in Keramos 153/96, p. 57).
