Literature:
Paul Müller and Viola Radlach: Giovanni Giacometti. Werkkatalog der Gemälde, Zurich 1997, vol. II-1, p. 266, no. 1908.04 (with ill.).

In 1908 Giacometti repeatedly took up motifs of his growing family. Two years earlier Bruno had been the last of his four children to see the light of day. Alberto had been born in 1901, Diego in 1902 and the only girl, Ottilia, in 1904.

The present painting, which belonged for decades to the future architect Bruno Giacometti, shows Annetta sitting under a walnut tree in Stampa with her second son. Diego later made a name for himself as an irreplaceable assistant to his important brother Alberto and, after his brother's death, with his bronze furniture, which remains highly coveted to this day. Two pieces of furniture by Diego Giacometti will be offered as catalogue numbers 3315 and 3318 in our Impressionism and Modern Art auction on 1st July.
