FOUR ILLUSTRATIONS AND FOLIOS FROM A DISPERSED SHAHNAMA.

India, Deccan, 17th c. folios ca. 20.3x12 cm, text fields ca. 13.5x7 cm, illustrations various dimensions.
Pigment colours, ink and gold on paper. Four illustrations with text at the back plus four leaves with text (recto and verso). The illustrations are depicting the first king Gayomarth and three scenes with the hero Rostam. Text in four gold ruled columns in nasta'liq with headings in tuluth in red and white. Minor restorations and damages. Fragile.

The manuscript derived possibly from Persia, 16th. c. and has been retouched in the 17th. c. in the Indian Deccan. In Kashmir, 19th. c. the manuscript has been remounted on paper and retouched once more, the illustrations to a varying degree.

Compare two folios from most likely the same Shahnama which has been sold at Christie's New York, March 2013, lot 227.

Provenance: Swiss dealer, acquired from an old Swiss private collection.
