Neuchâtel and Solothurn, Jent and Gassmann for the author, 1840-41. 8°. XII, 326 p., [1] sheet. Modern half-leather binding with a gold-stamped title on the spine and the original front cover of the brochure bound in; Quarto (large folio). Contemporary half-leather binding with the original front cover mounted (corners and edges bumped, somewhat stained and dusty)

I, 14 - Heralds of Science 98 - Lonchamp 14b. - Poggendorff I, 16. - The first German edition, published just a few months after the French original edition. - A groundbreaking work in glaciology and the study of ice ages. Although Agassiz later became one of Darwin's opponents, he is still considered one of his precursors. The beautiful plates depict glaciers, moraine formations, etc. - The plates have some slight finger or foxing marks in the margins.
