This watercolour by George Grosz holds a special significance as it belongs to the artist's group of prophetic works, in which he depicted acts of war and apocalyptic scenes as early as 1934 — scenes that would later become brutal realities during the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and the Second World War.
The present work was created in Bayside on Long Island, where Grosz resided following his immigration to the United States from 1933 until 1947.
