SIDE TABLE WITH ROUND PIETRA DURA TOP

Classicism, Germany, 19th century. In the style of Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
Wood, carved and gilt. Round top with pietra dura inlays on a fluted, slightly conical shaft with supports designed as eagle's talons. Disc-shaped base decorated with palmette scrolls, on curved legs with paw feet. Numbered 952 in red chalk at the bottom.
Ø 48, H 74 cm.

Alterations and restorations.

Provenance: Important German private collection.

The model for this table was a Roman bronze tripod from Herculaneum. Schinkel was inspired by the ancient Roman model for a lost round table from Charlottenburg Palace. Cf. Bärbel Hedinger & Julia Berger (eds.) Karl Friedrich Schinkel Möbel und Interieur, Deutscher Kunstverlag, Berlin/München, 2002, pp. 26/27, figs. 6/7. In a copperplate engraving by Johann M. Mauch titled "Vorbilder für Fabrikanten und Handwerker" (Models for Manufacturers and Craftsmen), further decorative elements of a three-legged table can be seen, which can also be found on our table. The legs with the round intermediate shelf and the fluted shaft resemble the antique models (cf. Achim Stiegel, Berliner Möbelkunst, 2003, p. 42, fig. 6.).
