SHIVA-LINGAM of light stone. An octagonal shaft rises from a square base and ends in a rounded shape. A thin engraved line indicates the foreskin. The three form elements symbolize the union of the three deities of the Hindu Trinity: Brahma, the Creator (cube), Vishnu, the Preserver (the octagon), and Shiva, the Destroyer and Renewer (the abstracted phallus). Khmer, 12th century. H 47 cm.
