LONGCASE CLOCK, George I, the dial signed DANIEL QUARE LONDON (Daniel Quare, maitre 1708), England circa 1720. Burlwood, mahogany and exotic precious woods in veneer and finely inlaid with flowers, cartouches and frieze. The case glazed on three sides, with turned columns at the angles, oval pendulum window and bun feet. Finely engraved bronze dial with minutes, hours, seconds and date and anchor escapement striking the 1/2 hours on bell. H 219 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Zurich.
Provenienz: Privatbesitz, Zürich. D. Quare, einer der bedeutendsten Uhrmacher Englands, wurde bereits 1671 in die Uhrmacherzunft gewählt und erhielt seine Meisterwürde im Jahr 1708. Er führte seine Werkstatt zunächst an der St. Martin le Grand und später an der King's Arms, Exchange Alley. Nach 1700 arbeitete er mit S. Horsman zusammen. Zu Quares illustrer adliger Klientel gehörte auch König George I; eine "longcase clock" steht heute noch im Hampton Court Palace in London. Lit.: E.L.
