BUDDHA MUCHALINDA.Khmer, Lopburi, 13th century. H 71 cm. Sandstone. The Buddah is seated in a meditative posture on a coiled naga which is protecting and sheltering him with its seven heads. The downcast eyes and the meditative smile express contemplation and concentration. The carefully arranged hair is separated by a band, the only adornment of the Buddha. On the back: A delicate lotus rosette is positioned between the densely patterned scales on the canopy of snakes. From a private Swiss collection.
