In this work, Albert Marquet masterfully captures the mood of a foggy, yet sunny winter morning on the Quai des Grands Augustin in Paris. The artist perfects that "goût développé pour les nuances de gris," as aptly described once by Christophe Duvivier. While in similar compositions individual color or thematic accents are still emphasized, here everything is subordinated to the cool, monochrome color scheme of gray tones.
Vehicles, figures, and lanterns are only implied; the street disappears after a short distance and blurs, almost ghostly, into the haze of buildings in the background. Likewise, the brighter light of the sun on the water blends smoothly with the sky.
This subtle handling of light and color lends the work an atmospheric density and an almost meditative effect. It suggests the tranquility and beauty of a winter morning in the city.
