RAVENSWAAY, JAN VAN
1815 Hilversum 1849
Johannes Gijsbertusz van Ravenswaay was born in Hilversum in 1815. Under the guidance of his uncle, the Hilversum landscape and animal painter Jan van Ravenswaay (1789–1869), he emerged as a remarkable painter of summer and winter landscapes. Various study trips took him to Germany as he sought to study nature more closely. Impressed by the magnificent forests, he began to add staffages of figures to his paintings, which he reduced to a very small scale, however, in order to make the landscape appear even more imposing. Van Ravenswaay's promising artistic career tragically came to an end with his early death in 1849 at the age of just thirty-four.
