1601 Antwerp 1678

Jan was born in 1601 the first child of Jan Brueghel the Elder and learned the painter's craft from his father at an early age. In 1622 he travelled to Italy and returned to Antwerp in 1625 to take over his late father's studio. In his early work, Jan Brueghel the Younger worked increasingly in the style of his father. In 1651 he received public recognition through commissions from the Austrian court, arranged by his brother-in-law David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690), who had been appointed court painter and conservator to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm in 1647.
