DYCK, ANTHONIS VAN

Antwerp 1599–1641 London

Anthony van Dyck was born in Antwerp, the son of a wealthy textile merchant and an art embroiderer. At the age of ten he was already a pupil of Hendrick van Balen (1575–1632). Between 1616 and 1620 he was active in the circle of Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), with whom he lived. By the age of 19, van Dyck was working as an independent and respected master and from 11 February 1618 was listed as a Freimeister of the Guild of St Luke. At that time, he commanded fees comparable to those of Jacob Jordaens (1593–1678) and Peter Paul Rubens. From 1621 to 1626 he lived intermittently in Italy, including Genoa, Rome, Sicily, and Venice, where he perfected his portraiture. With his stay in Italy, the influence of Rubens was relegated in favour of Veronese and even more so Titian. In 1626 Anthonis van Dyck returned to Antwerp and often stayed at the court in Brussels. Van Dyck moved to London in 1632, where he worked as court painter, a favourite of the aristocracy and outstanding portraitist for Charles I. In the same year, the king elevated him to the rank of nobility. The largest coherent collection of his works is still the property of the English Crown.
