Böhmisch Leipa 1745–1798 Hamburg

Hickel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and travelled throughout Europe, which had a lasting influence on his style. In 1786 Hickel became court painter to Emperor Joseph II of Austria. He also established himself beyond the Austrian and German borders as a portraitist of the upper middle classes in Switzerland, especially in Basel and Bern.
