HOOCH, PIETER DE

Rotterdam 1629–after 1683 Amsterdam

With regard to artistic influences, we know that Pieter de Hooch studied with Nicolaes Berchem (1620–1683), amongst others. His early interiors from the early 1650s, which focus mainly on anecdotal scenes, also show the influence of Gerard ter Borch (1617–1681). The artist's mature phase around 1658 is then characterised by those refined spatial constructions that were to become characteristic of de Hooch's oeuvre.
