SAVERY, ROELANT

Kortrijk 1576–1639 Utrecht

The Flemish painter Roelant Savery was one of the most important Dutch painters of the 17th century. Alongside painters such as Gillis Claesz. de Hondecoeter (1575–1638), Paulus Potter (1625–1654) or Hendrick ten Oever (1639–1716), he played a decisive role in the development and establishment of autonomous works depicting animals. Brueghel's influence on Savery's art and craftsmanship was also enthusiastically noted by his 17th-century contemporaries. Savery's stylistic proximity to Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625) made him a particular favourite with Emperor Rudolf II, who greatly admired the works of the Brueghel family of painters. Again, at the court of Rudolf II, Savery was able to pursue his fascination for plants, animals, and landscapes. The Emperor's fondness for curiosities and rare creatures, which he gathered in his so-called "Kunst- und Wunderkammer" (Chamber of Art and Curiosities), provided the painter with a wealth of material to study.
