TIZIANO VECELLIO, genannt TITIAN
Pieve de Cadore 1485/1490–1576 Venice
Titian is considered the leading representative of 16th century Venetian painting and one of the principal masters of the Italian High Renaissance. Titian came to Venice as a nine-year-oldand was trained by the brothers Gentile and Giovanni Bellini. In 1513 he opened his own workshop in San Samuele and became celebrated throughout Europe. In 1533 he was elevated to the nobility by Emperor Charles V and appointed court painter. In 1545 Titian travelled to Rome at the invitation of Pope Paul III. When Titian died of the plague at an advanced age in 1576, he was probably the most successful painter in Venetian history.
