COURBET, GUSTAVE

Ornans 1819–1877 La Tour–de–Peilz

Gustave Courbet is considered the founding father of Realism and a pioneer of Classical Modernism, and was self-taught in the art of painting. His oeuvre bears witness to an extensive range of motifs, with portraits, landscapes, genre scenes and animal motifs among his preferred subjects.
In his younger years, he initially took his cue from the works of the great realists such as Michelangelo (1475–1564), Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–1669) and Frans Hals (1582–before 1666) and then applied his artistic inspiration and his own distinctive style.
His penchant for provocation and breaking taboos was always reflected in his works, which are characterised, among other things, by a revolutionary world view and stood in stark contrast to the reactionary regime of Napoleon III. Despite the initial rejection of his works at the Paris Salon, as they did not correspond to the prevailing notion of idealised representation, Courbet led 19th-century art into new territory and helped to foster a new understanding of art among his fellow academic artists and the contemporary public.

Jean-Jacques Fernier of the Musée Gustave Courbet Ornans suggests that this painting is a work from the series of "Puits Noir" which Courbet executed with his assistants in Ornans, the town of his birth. The date can be assumed to be in the first half of the 1870s, which is the period between Courbet's release from Sainte-Pélagie prison and his Swiss exile. Courbet's assistant for this painting probably came from the circle of Alexandre Rapin (1839-1889).
