FANTIN-LATOUR, HENRI

Grenoble 1836–1904 Buré

The young Henri Fantin-Latour was already considered a child prodigy at the beginning of his artistic career, when he was trained in his father's studio and first made a name for himself with group portraits and still lifes. He soon found inspiration in the Old Masters in the Louvre, such as Paolo Veronese (1528–1588), Diego Velázquez (1599–1660), Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606–1669) and Jean-Siméon Chardin (1699–1779). He seems to have been particularly impressed by Chardin's works and translated the harmony and simplicity of those compositions into an independent style, which, with its striking colouring, has even been described as a declaration of love for the history of art.
Constant contact and artistic exchange with colleagues such as Gustave Courbet (1819–1877), Edgar Degas (1834–1917), Édouard Manet (1832–1883) and James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) brought him renown far beyond his own country.
Fantin-Latour's sources of inspiration seem inexhaustible and can even be found in his engagement with music and the works of the German composer, Wilhelm Richard Wagner (1813–1883), which is reflected in the melodic quality and virtuoso use of colours as if on a chromatic scale.
