GRÜTZNER, EDUARD

Grosskarlowitz 1846–1925 München

„Art should exalt and bring cheer“, as Eduard Grützner himself once said (Balogh 1991, p. 4). And this is how Grützner (1846–1925) approached his artistic predilection for juggling humorous images from different perspectives. With nimble brushstrokes and an amusing style, he presented detailed scenes of everyday life in the monastery, and if one were to believe Grützner's depictions of these men of the Church, life in the monastery must have been a light-hearted affair.
Along with Carl Spitzweg (1808–1885) and Franz von Defregger (1835–1921), Eduard von Grützner was one of the most important Munich genre painters of the second half of the 19th century. Discovered and encouraged by the village priest of his birthplace Groß-Karlowitz, he learned drawing at Hermann Dyck's (1812–1874) school of arts and crafts in Munich after completing his grammar school education. He was then drawn to Johann Georg Hiltensperger (1806–1890) and Alexander Ströhuber (1814–1882), who introduced him to the ideals of beauty in antiquity. In 1867, following his training at the Munich Academy, Eduard Grützner became inspired by the most important exponent of Realist history painting, Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826–1886). This contact would prove to have a particularly formative influence on the rest of his artistic life. In 1886 Grützner became a professor at the Munich Academy and was ennobled in 1916.
