HANSEN, HEINRICH

1821 Frederiksberg 1890

Heinrich Hansen was the first Danish artist to specialise exclusively in architectural painting. After completing his time as a journeyman painter, he went to Copenhagen in 1842 with the intention of training as a decorative painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Over the years he also worked on restoration projects at Rosenborg, Kronborg and Frederiksborg castles. Scholarships enabled him to spend time in most parts of Western Europe, including Germany and Italy. After returning to Denmark, he worked for many years as a lecturer on perspective and ornamentation and later as a professor at the Academy.
