KRUSEMAN, FREDERIK MARIANUS

Frederik Marinus Kruseman was one of the main exponents of the Dutch Romantic school of painting in the 19th century. He specialised above all in winter and summer landscapes and executed them with skill and a great feeling for light and colour. Influenced by various Romantic landscape painters such as Nicolaas Johannes Roosenboom (1805–1880), Jan van Ravenswaaij (1789–1869) and Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803–1862), this Haarlem artist learned to create fabulous, dreamlike and technically accomplished interpretations of various summer and winter landscapes. The 1850s and 1860s are considered the high point of Kruseman's career. The paintings he produced in that period are said in many respects to surpass even the works of his teacher Koekkoek.
