LIESTE, CORNELIS

1817 Haarlem 1861

The Haarlem painter Cornelis Lieste was introduced to the art of landscape painting by Nicolaas Johannes Roosenboom (1805–1880). In the years that followed, Lieste, a self-taught artist, developed his skills on study trips through Belgium and Germany. Lieste's oeuvre was clearly influenced by the work of his fellow Belgian and German Romantic artists. Nevertheless, he was able to translate this into an independent sense of form and an unmistakable mode of representation and became an important figure within the Dutch Romantic movement, with an outstanding ability to achieve realistic chiaroscuro effects.
