MELBYE, ANTON

Copenhagen 1818–1875 Paris

The emotionally intense seascapes of the Danish artist Anton Melbye were highly regarded and praised by his contemporaries. The seascapes alternate in virtuoso fashion between Symbolism and Naturalism.
As a private student, Melbye first studied from 1838 to 1839 under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783–1853), who was known for his objective approach to nature and art. What he saw was translated onto the picture support with mathematical precision and exact use of perspective. On his study trips, the Dane was drawn to Hamburg and Paris, among other places. However, he was particularly impressed by the expressive spectacle of light and colour that he encountered on his journeys to the Bosphorus. His spontaneous and romantic impulses enabled him to translate what he saw into his compositions and to liberate himself from his teacher's sober conception of art.
