PIANCASTELLI, GIOVANNI
Castel Bolognese 1845–1926 Bologna
Giovanni Piancastelli was born in Castel Bolognese in 1845. He received his first painting and drawing lessons from a Cappucini priest in a local monastery. From 1860, he attended the Scuola di Disegno in Faenza, where he studied under Achille Farina (1804–1879). In 1862 he travelled to Rome, where he was apprenticed to Guido Guidi (1835–1918). He also studied at the Accademia di San Luca under Francesco Podesti (1800–1895), Vincenzo Pasqualoni (1820–1885), Annibale Angelini (1810–1886) and Antonio Sarti (1797–1880), among others.
At the beginning of his career, his focus was on genre and landscape painting, before later devoting himself to religious motifs and portraiture.
After serving in the infantry, he was hired by Prince Marcantonio Borghese to teach painting. From 1886, he was entrusted with reorganising and structuring the dispersed Borghese collections, which was followed by his appointment as director of the Galleria Borghese in 1902.
