REBELL, JOSEF
Vienna 1787 - 1828 Dresden
The Viennese artist Joseph Rebell was a landscape painter and watercolourist known primarily for his depictions of Naples, Rome, and the Campagna.
In the years between 1799 and 1809, Rebell studied at the Vienna Academy, but only came to landscape painting through his teacher, Michael Wutky (1739–1822). His study trips to Italy moulded his painting style, which at the beginning could still be seen as part of the Classical and Romantic traditions. However, influenced by his French and English artist colleagues, he turned to Realism. Together with Franz Steinfeld (1787–1868), he was one of the founding fathers of realist landscape painting in Austria.
