SCHELFHOUT, ANDREAS

1787 Den Haag 1870

Andreas Schelfhout was born in The Hague in 1787. He was one of the most influential painters of the Romantic period in The Hague and his works testify to an exceptional level of skill. Unlike any other painter, he was able to convey icy winter landscapes, panoramas, beaches and seascapes, in combination with brilliantly formed images of clouds. His influence can also be seen in the works of many of his pupils, such as Jan Willem van Borselen (1825–1892), Pierre Louis Dubourcq (1815–1873), Charles Leickert (1816–1907), Johannes Franciscus Hoppenbrouwers (1819–1866), Johan-Barthold Jongkind (1819–1891), Wijnand Nuijen (1813–1839) and many others. A celebrated painter and welcome guest of King Willem III and Queen Sofie, he died in his native city at the age of 82.
