STYKA, ADAM

Kielce 1890–1959 New York

The work of the Polish-born painter Adam Styka, who completed his initial artistic training at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, is characterised by a strong and luminous colour palette. For his loyal service in the French army during the First World War, he received the Order of National Merit (Ordre national du Mérite) and was also granted French citizenship. With this and the financial support of the French government, he was able to travel to North Africa to pursue his artistic interest in the region.
