TROUILLEBERT, PAUL DÉSIRÉ

1829 Paris 1900

Paul-Désiré Trouillebert, born in Paris in 1829, was one of the most important members of the Barbizon School. He is best known for his landscape paintings, which are often compared to the works of Camille Corot (1796–1875) in terms of style and composition. His style is unmistakable, with a misty colouring, a hallmark of Trouillebert's work, which he used to subtly capture his motifs using a loose brushstroke and a warm and light colour palette. Trouillebert received his initial training from August-Antoine-Ernest Hébert (1817–1908), who honed his artistic eye, not only in the depiction of landscapes, but also in genre and portrait painting. He celebrated his debut at the Paris Salon in 1865 with the portrait 'De MIIe A.'. In the years that followed, he continued to exhibit at the Salon and presented various genre and portrait paintings. From 1869 he increasingly turned to landscape painting and received much encouragement and words of praise, especially for his work 'Au Bois Rossignolet'. Despite his closeness to the Barbizon School and the comparison with Corot, Trouillebert refused to align himself with any specific genre. To this day, the works of the Paris-born artist can be found in important public and private collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Hermitage in St Petersburg and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice.
