VAN ASSCHE, HENRI

1774 Brüssel 1841

Henri Van Assche was born in Brussels in 1774. As a young artist he travelled to Switzerland and Italy, where he discovered a fascination for nature and its spectacles of light. While remaining faithful to the academic style of painting, a recurring religious mood can be discerned in his oeuvre. He received the nickname 'Le peintre cascade' because of the many waterfalls and water mills that appear in various forms in his compositions. Van Assche died in his birthplace in 1841 at the age of 67.
