Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski, a member of the Munich School of Painting, is considered one of the main exponents of 19th century Polish painting. He studied art at the academies in Warsaw, Dresden and Prague. Later he studied under Alexander von Wagner (1838–1919) at the Munich Academy and subsequently joined the Polish group of artists active in Munich around Józef Brandt (1841–1915), who strongly influenced Kowalski both in terms of motifs and style.
