LEWITT, SOL

* 9.9.1928 Hartford, † 8.4.2007 New York City

Solomon LeWitt was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1928, the child of Russian-Jewish immigrants. In 1949, LeWitt graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. During a trip to Europe, he encountered the Old Masters for the first time. After his military service in the Korean War, in 1953 he moved to New York and set up a studio on the Lower East Side. During his time in New York, LeWitt attended courses at the School of Visual Arts and worked part-time as a graphic designer for various magazines. The 1950s were a formative period for LeWitt's later career: he experimented with painting during the day and also worked as a night porter at MoMA - his work colleagues included Robert Ryman, Dan Flavin, and Robert Mangold. The exhibition "Sixteen Americans", curated by Dorothy Canning Miller and featuring works by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Frank Stella, also had a significant influence on LeWitt's work as an artist. LeWitt taught at several New York schools in the late 1960s, including New York University and the School of Visual Arts. In 1980 he moved to Spoleto, Italy, and after his return to the States in the late 1980s he lived in Connecticut until his death.

LeWitt's work has been exhibited at the Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, the Australian National Gallery, the Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, and the National Gallery of Art, among other institutions. Important retrospectives were held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. LeWitt died in New York City in 2007.
