Am 25. Oktober 1881 kommt Pablo Picasso (eigtl. Pablo Ruiz y Picasso) als erster Sohn des Malers und Zeichenlehrers José Ruiz Blasco und dessen Ehefrau María Picasso y López in Malaga zur Welt. Bereits mit sieben Jahren beginnt er unter Anleitung seines Vaters zu malen. Mit 14 Jahren besteht er mühelos die Aufnahmeprüfung an der Kunstakademie La Llotja in Barcelona. 1897 folgt ein Studium an der Academia San Fernando in Madrid. 1900 unternimmt er seine erste Reise nach Paris. In seiner Blauen Periode von 1901 bis 1904 entwickelt Picasso seinen ersten eigenen Stil. In dieser Phase entstehen schwermütige Figurenbilder in blau- und blaugrünen Tönen. Nach jährlichen Paris-Reisen zieht Picasso 1904 endgültig in die Metropole und lernt Fernande Olivier kennen, die seine Geliebte und sein Modell wird. In seiner Rosa Periode von 1905 bis 1907 bevorzugt Picasso Zirkusmotive in heiteren Farben. In dieser Epoche entstehen auch seine ersten Radierungen und Kupferstiche.  Ab 1908 entwickeln Georges Braque und Pablo Picasso den analytischen Kubismus. In dieser Stilrichtung werden Objekte mit einfachen geometrischen Figuren, wie Kugeln, Kegeln oder Pyramiden dargestellt. Ab 1912 werden die Bilder immer abstrakter und gehen in die Arbeiten des synthetischen Kubismus über. Die ersten Collagen entstehen, denen Picasso fremde Materialien wie Sand, Holz und Blech zuführt.  Um 1917 fertigt Picasso für das Ballett seines Freundes Jean Cocteau Bühnenbilder und Kostüme. Hier lernt er die russische Tänzerin Olga Koklowa kennen, die er ein Jahr später heiratet und mit der er einen Sohn hat. Ab 1919 greift Picasso vermehrt auf antike Motive und Vorbilder zurück. Seine Figurenbilder werden zunehmend klassizistisch. 1927 macht er Bekanntschaft mit Marie-Thérèse Walter, die seine Geliebte und sein Modell wird. Ab 1928 gestaltet er seine ersten Drahtplastiken und Eisenskulpturen. Er befasst sich zudem vermehrt mit der Grafik und erstellt viele bedeutende Radierfolgen. 

Angeregt durch seine Spanien-Reisen tauchen ab 1934 immer wieder Stierkampf-Szenen in seinen Werken auf. Seine Geliebte Marie-Thérèse Walter schenkt ihm 1935 eine Tochter, was zur Trennung von seiner Ehefrau führt. 1937 malt Picasso für den spanischen Pavillon an der Pariser Weltausstellung das Gemälde "Guernica", ein grossformatiges Anti-Kriegs-Bild. Hier lernt er die Fotografin Dora Maar kennen, seine neue Geliebte und Modell. 

1943 macht er die Bekanntschaft mit Françoise Gilot, mit der er ab 1948 zusammenlebt und zwei Kinder hat. Ab 1945 fertigt er vermehrt Lithographien an. Zwei Jahre später beschäftigt er sich mit der Anfertigung von Keramiken. 1961 heiratet er die 46 Jahre jüngere Jacqueline Roque. Es ist auffällig, wie sich sein Stil jeweils ändert, sobald er eine neue Frau an seiner Seite hat. Sein Schaffen wird daher oft nach diesen Phasen eingeteilt und diskutiert.  Pablo Picasso stirbt am 8. April 1973 in Mougins. Pablo Picasso ist Maler, Grafiker und Bildhauer. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts, dessen Produktivität ein Gesamtwerk von geschätzten 50 000 Kunstwerken umfasst.
