SULTAN, DONALD

* 5.5.1951 Asheville

Donald Sultan was born in 1951 in Asheville, North Carolina. His father was a tyre manufacturer, but did abstract paintings in his spare time, and his mother was closely involved with the theatre, which led to Sultan's early interest in the creative industry. Encouraged by his father, however, he decided to pursue a professional artistic education and studied at the University of North Carolina until 1973, graduating with a Master's degree from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975. In the same year he moved to New York, where he soon got a full-time job as a craftsman in an art gallery. Four years later, Sultan received a $2,500 grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, which enabled him to devote himself entirely to art.

He became known as a member of the "New Image" movement of the end of the 1970s through his voluminous still lifes and landscapes, which depict abstracted forms with fine contours in light colours against dark backgrounds. He reduced his pictorial objects, often fruits and flowers, to their bare outlines which were sharply contoured.While still a student, he was one of the first to use a wide range of industrial tools and materials, especially tar, instead of traditional brushes and paints. Sultan's frequent use of tar was influenced by his father's tyre business, and his interest in the industrial world stems from his years at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Sultan's art straddles the line between the abstract and the everyday, combining geometric and organic forms in a visual language that is both monumental and fragile. The raw pictorial ground, which Sultan describes as "something brutal and beginning", stands in tense contrast to the finely worked pictorial surfaces. Sultan developed his working method in the context of Process Art and Pop Art, which dominated New York in the 1970s.His first solo exhibition took place in 1977 at the Artist's Space in New York, followed by exhibitions at the Mary Boone Gallery and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In the 1980s, renowned museums such as MoMA began to include his works in their collections; today, Sultan's works are to be found at the Met, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, London's Tate Modern and many more. He is also the youngest artist to be honoured with a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York at the age of 37. In 2008, a monograph on his 30-year career as an artist was published under the title "Donald Sultan: The Theater of the Object".
