FAUTRIER, JEAN

1898 in Frankreich geboren, zieht Jean Fautrier 1907 nach dem frühen Tod seines Vaters nach England. Er besucht bereits mit 14 Jahren die Royal Academy und später die Slade School of Art, bis er 1917 zum Kriegsdienst eingezogen wird. Durch eine Giftgasverletzung leidet er zeitlebens an einer Lungenkrankheit, wird aus dem Militär entlassen und erholt sich 1920/21 im Tirol. Zu dieser Zeit entstehen die ersten expressiven Porträts und Landschaften, gleichzeitig experimentiert er mit Kompositionen, deren Motiv durch monochrome Farbgebung und schnelle Farbgesten zu verschwinden scheinen. Bis Ende der 1920er Jahre stellt Fautrier in zahlreichen Ausstellungen aus und wird von der Galerie Guillaume in Paris unter Vertrag genommen, bis er sich dann ab 1930 immer mehr von der Kunst zurückzieht und 1934 endgültig Paris verlässt. Bevor er 1940 in das besetzte Paris zurückkehrt, arbeitet er als Skilehrer und Hotelier. Fautrier schliesst sich der Résistance an, wird verhaftet und findet nach seiner Freilassung Unterschlupf im Sanatorium von Dr. Lesavoureux, wo seine Serie "Otages" entsteht, die seinen Durchbruch als Künstler bedeutet. Bis 1954 ist seine finanzielle Lage schwierig, wodurch seine künstlerische Arbeit immer wieder unterbrochen wird. Zu dieser Zeit arbeitet er für den Verlag Gallimard und entwickelt die sogenannten "Originaux Multiples". Nach 1954 bessert sich seine Lage und er beginnt wieder mit Öl zu Malen. Fünf Jahre später gehört er zu den Teilnehmern der documenta II und erhält 1960 mit Hans Hartung den Grossen Preis der Venedig Biennale und zwei Jahre später den Grossen Preis der Tokyo Biennale. Von schwerer Krankheit gezeichnet stirbt Jean Fautrier 1964.
