Die Malerin, Filmemacherin und Performance Künstlerin Yayoi Kusama ist eine der bekanntesten japanischen Künstlerinnen der Nachkriegszeit und gilt als Vorläuferin der Pop Art. 

 1929 in der Stadt Matsumoto geboren, prägt ein strenges und autoritäres Elternhaus Yayoi Kusamas Kindheit. Im Alter von 12 Jahren muss sie, während des Zweiten Weltkrieges, in einer Fallschirmfabrik arbeiten. Familiärer Druck und Ablehnung seitens ihrer Eltern führen zu immer wiederkehrenden Halluzinationen: Kusama sieht Punkt- Netzmuster und fürchtet, sich darin aufzulösen. Diese Angst wird allerdings zu einem wesentlichen Bestandteil ihrer Kunst: bereits 1939 entstehen Zeichnungen, in welchen sie die Muster einfliessen lässt. 

 1948 darf sie eine Ausbildung an der Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts beginnen. Trotz erschwerter Bedingungen für Frauen, in der (japanischen) Kunstszene Fuss zu fassen, hat Kusama in den nächsten Jahren neun Ausstellungen, davon sechs Einzelausstellungen. 1958 zieht sie nach New York und etabliert sich dort als wichtiges Mitglied der Avantgarde neben Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg und Eva Hesse. Trotzdem bleibt der finanzielle Erfolg aus – ihre grossformatigen Werke der Infinity Nets mit gleichförmigen Netzmustern kosten damals nur 350 USD. 

 1961 beginnt Kusama, Stoffskulpturen als künstlerisches Medium einzusetzen. Möbel und andere Haushaltsgegenstände überzieht sie mit phallusartigen Stoffwülsten. Eines der bekanntesten Werke dieser Zeit ist die Couch Accumulation #1, die zusammen mit Werken von Andy Warhol 1962 in der Green Gallery ausgestellt wird. Auch Fotografien werden von der Japanerin eingesetzt: ab Mitte der 1960er Jahre lässt sich Kusama oft von bekannten Fotografen in theatralischen Posen ablichten. Manche Fotografien zeigen sie nackt, mit Punkten bemalt. 

 1966 gelingt Kusama mit dem Happening Narcissus Garden der internationale Durchbruch. Da ihre Arbeiten für die Biennale in Venedig nicht ausgewählt werden, beschliesst sie, ihre aus 1500 spiegelnden Kugeln bestehende Installation vor der Ausstellungshalle aufzubauen, welche von Passanten für je ungefähr 210 Euro erworben werden können. Bevor die Veranstalter der Biennale Kusamas Aktion polizeilich beenden können, wird sie bereits zur bekanntesten Künstlerin der Schau. Es folgen Happenings wie 14th Street Happening oder Walking Piece in New York. 1973 kehrt die Künstlerin in ihre Heimat zurück, begibt sich dort freiwillig in eine Nervenheilanstalt. Die 1980er sind von mehreren Einzelausstellungen in Japan geprägt, die zu weiterer Resonanz in Europa führen. 1993 werden ihre Arbeiten schliesslich auf der 44. Biennale gezeigt. 

 2006 wird sie mit dem Praemium Imperiale ("Nobelpreis der Künste") in der Sparte Malerei ausgezeichnet, 2009 zur Bunka Kōrōsha, einer Person mit besonderen kulturellen Verdiensten, ernannt. 2012 wird sie als Ehrenmitglied in die American Academy of Arts and Letters gewählt, 2016 wird mit dem Kulturorden ausgezeichnet.
