UECKER, GÜNTHER

Günther Uecker was born on 13 March 1930 in Wendorf in Germany (formerly part of East Germany). He grew up on the Wustrow peninsula, where his father was employed as an engineer in the aviation industry. After leaving school, he completed an apprenticeship as a housepainter and carpenter. Uecker then studied painting until 1953, first in Wismar (East Germany), and at the art academy in Berlin-Weissensee. In 1951 Uecker had the opportunity to go to West Berlin for the first time and so came across abstract art. In 1953, after a riot, he moved to West Berlin, where he explored the subjects of religion and philosophy, both of which were to influence his work.

From 1955 to 1957 Uecker continued his studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Otto Pankok. In the same year he created his first nail pictures, which are typical of his work today: three-dimensional, white-painted reliefs made of nails, which create their own dynamic through the alignment of the nails and the interplay of light and shadow. In 1961, Uecker became a member of the artist group ZERO, founded by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene, and together with Gerhard Richter was responsible for staging the demonstration ‘Museums can be habitable places’.

In 1970, Uecker represented Germany at the Venice Biennale. This was followed in the early 1970s by working visits to South America, Africa and Asia, and in the 1980s to Japan, Siberia, China, Iceland and Mongolia. Since then, Uecker has also addressed political issues in his works, for example in his cycle ‘Aschebilder’ (Ash Pictures), which reflect on the Chernobyl catastrophe. From 1974 to 1995 he taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy as a professor, designed the prayer room in the new Reichstag building in Berlin in 1999 and co-founded the ‘Zero foundation’ in 2008.

Uecker lives and works in Düsseldorf and St. Gallen.
