Not Vial wird am 15. Februar 1948 in Sent im Unterengadin geboren. Durch den Kunsthistoriker Max Huggler kommt Not Vital bereits 1962 mit Kunst in Berührung. Er studiert in Paris und Rom und lebt in den 1970er Jahren in New York, wo er mit Künstlern wie Willem de Kooning, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol und Julian Schnabel Bekanntschaft macht. 1993 nimmt Not Vital zusätzlich die US-amerikanische Bürgschaft an. Heute arbeitet der Objektkünstler auf der ganzen Welt, unter anderem in Rio de Janeiro, Peking - wo einst Ai Weiwei im benachbarten Atelier sass - und in Sent. Seine zahllosen Reisen und die Erfahrungen und Eindrücke anderer Kulturen beeinflussen sein Werk stark. Gleichzeitig ist er aber auch von seiner Heimat, dem Engadin, geprägt. Vitals Œuvre ist unglaublich vielseitig und reicht von der Zeichnung über die Malerei bis hin zur Skulptur und Architektur. Viele seiner Werke sind aus Materialien wie Bronze, Marmor, Keramik oder Glas gefertigt. In seinem Garten in Sent, dem «Parkin Not dal Mot» präsentiert der Künstler von 1998 bis heute seine Skulpturen und architektonischen Installationen in einem natürlichen Rahmen. Mit der 2003 gegründeten Stiftung «Fundaziun Not Vital» erhält er den Preis «Auszeichnung für gute Bauten Graubünden». Not Vital setzt sich für den Erhalt der Engadiner Kultur ein und bemüht sich, viele Bücher und andere Kulturgüter der romanischen Region an ihren Ursprungsort zurückzubringen.
