Literature:
The present painting is an oil study for the later principal work, "Bacchanal" of 1905. In accordance with Stuck's intention to portray "only the purely human, the eternally true," he is less interested in the mythological narrative than depicting the fundamental driving forces: drunkenness, movement, desire, and the blurring of boundaries.
The composition corresponds to that of the final “Bacchanal, " but this version appears freer, more abstract, and less detailed. Stuck concentrates here entirely on the charged energy and expressiveness of the scene. He reveals his more spontaneous, experimental side: The application of paint is vibrant, almost eruptive, as if the artist himself were painting in the state of intoxication he represents in the picture.
