Broad landscape with settlers. 1856. Oil on canvas. Signed in Cyrillic lower left: Aivazovski. 1856. 93 x 145 cm. Provenance: European private collection. Gianni Caffiero has confirmed the authenticity of the painting on the basis of a photograph. The painting will be included in the catalogue raisonné which is currently being prepared. This painting is most probably the one mentioned in F. I. Bulgakov: Unsere Maler. 1764–1889, Vol. 1, 1890, p. 3. Bulgakov points out that this is the first landscape painting by the artist. It represents the Izumskaja steppe near the border between Russia and Ukraine, with salt harvesters marching from the Crimea to the inner country.
