HALF-HEIGHT CABINET “SOCRATES AND ASPASIA” WITH CONTRE-BOULLE MARQUETRY

Louis XIV style, Paris, ca. 1870. Stamped Befort Jeune. The bronzes are signed on the back in part with the name Befort Jeune or a monogram BJ, and numbered (Mathieu Béfort, known as Béfort Jeune, 1813–1880). Based on a model by André-Charles Boulle (1642–1732).
Ebony in veneer and brown-backed tortoiseshell with engraved brass inlays in the form of arabesques, flowers, foliage and fillets. Rectangular body with straight frame on a slightly protruding base with round feet. Stepped, slightly protruding cornice. Front with double door. The front is architecturally structured with gilt bronze decoration in the form of a seated figures of Socrates and Aspasia, a female mask, scrollwork, corner scrolls, fleurons, rosettes, leaf friezes, shell scrolls, cartouche medallions and garlands. Black marble top (later). 1 key.

“Rouge de France” marble and gilt bronze with dark green patina. Stepped architectural case with a vase finial flanked by two seated bronze figures, allegories of Day and Night after designs by Michelangelo for the tomb epitaph of Giuliano de' Medici. The lidded vase with three ram legs and ram heads and vine tendrils. On a rectangular, rounded marble base with a central projection, on flattened, gadrooned feet. Decorated with cornucopias, drapery and reliefs with playing putti. White enamel dial painted with a flower garland. Parisian movement with half-hour strike on bell (pendulum missing).

Ebony inlaid with brass fillets. Rectangular body on a cut-out and slightly protruding base. Front with door flanked by pilasters decorated with female busts. The door with eight rectangular pietra dura inlays, depicting birds, butterflies, insects and branches. Multilevel cornice with black marble top with a glued, wooden plate covered with velour. Rich bronze decoration in the form of female busts, leaf masks, acanthus and floral friezes, as well Hermes as a boy, and a boy with a globe on the sides. With dealer's label on the back, dated 8.5.1975. The bronze fittings on the sides are monogrammed bT on the back.

Gilt bronze, in part with a brown patina. Central male figures, probably mythological figures, one standing on a fish, the other on a shell. Both with cornucopiae in their hands, and with five curved light branches with vase-shaped nozzles on the lower level and four light branches with bud-shaped nozzles on the second level, crowned by a central torch. On a square pedestal with openwork acanthus leaf and rocaille feet. Rich decoration in the form of flower garlands, flower still lifes and various flowers and branches. Both candelabra numbered 4026.

Ebony and reddish-brown underlaid tortoiseshell, in part polychrome colored, with partially engraved brass, copper, tin, and mother-of-pearl inlays in the form of geometric fillets, arabesques, floral diamonds, and foliage. Trapezoidal body with concave sides on a cut-out frame and plinth. Single-door front between slanted corner pilasters. Stepped, slightly protruding cornice. Rich, finely chased matte and polished gilt bronze decoration in the form of triton masks, flora and faun masks, Hercules heads, allegorical trophies with symbols of art and science, panthers, rocailles, acanthus leaves, decorative friezes, rosettes, etc. 1 key.

Gilt bronze and dark-lacquered sheet metal. Two young women walking, accompanied by a boy with a double flute, carrying a spherical clock with a child wearing a straw hat sitting on top. On a rectangular base, round at the front, decorated with playing putti, the side panels with applied openwork acanthus leaf volutes. The spherical case is decorated with Arabic numerals for the hours (digits 3 and 4 missing). Parisian movement with half-hour strike on a bell. (Pendulum, key and one hand missing).

Two curved light branches with acanthus leaves, connected by fruit garlands, with drip pans in the form of fruit still lifes and a vase-shaped nozzle, and a central light branch protruding from the snake's mouth.

MANTEL SET

Louis XVI style, Paris, ca. 1880. Probably Henry Dasson (1825–1896).
Chased and punched bronze, matte- and polished gilt, in part with a dark patina. Brass and white marble. Comprising: a pair of brûle-parfums “à l'Athénienne” and a mantel clock “à cercle tournant”. The brûle-parfums feature a cylindrical flat bowl and openwork rim, and a flat removable lid, and are lavishly decorated with fruit and flowers. The bowl is supported by three caryatids with rich garlands and cloven feet, resting on a retracted trefoil base with a central grape palmette and fluted gilt round feet. The clock has a spherical case with a removable cover featuring a putto holding a torch, seated on a cloud. White enamel chapter ring “à cercle tournant” with Roman numerals for the hours, the time indicated by an arrow. The case is supported by three graces entwined in a floral garland. On a retracted trefoil base in white marble, and round feet. Movement with balance and half-hour strike on bell. Gilt mounts and applications in the form of fleurons, palmettes and bead and reel.

London, 1867/68. maker's mark Stephen Smith & Son.
Silver-gilt and cut crystal glass. Two mounted glass aiguières and a silver-gilt pouring ewer on a carriage with two putti in the guise of Bacchantes. Lavish vine leaves and tendril decoration. On the central, slightly raised plateau, a magnificent cartouche with coats of arms of the Worshipful Company of Distillers and motto on either side.
Carafes: H 31 cm; ewer: H 33 cm; carriage: L 60 cm. Ca. 3400 g (without carafes).
