A CIRCULAR PORTABLE SHRINE (KOGOBUTSU).

Japan, 19th c. Ø 7.3 cm.
Handy pocket zushi, also known as goshinbutsu (lit. personal guardian/Buddha) in sandalwood with a dark lacquer finish. Buddhist protective deities Fudô Myôô with sword and Aizen Myôô sitting above the wish-fulfilling gemstones (hôju) at interior, painted in red, green and gold. This type of container was also used to store incense, which is why the term kôgôbutsu ("Buddha incense container") is also used.

Japan, Meiji period, Ø 9 cm.
Sandalwood goshinbutsu (lit. personal guardian/Buddha) with accents in gold. Inside, a carved figurative mandala with Nichiren as central figure, embedded in a crowd of heavenly guardians, the bodhisattvas Monju and Fugen or Daikoku. Above a stele with the Lotus Sutra mantra Nam Myôhô Renge Kyô. A calligraphic mandala in the lid describes the pictorial representation. Signed Hiroyoshi (presumably Gotô Hiroyoshi). Minor crack. Brocade pouch.

Wood with gold and red lacquer and a lattice-like (kagome) patterned ground in kirikane. When opened, the so-called "pocket Buddha" (kaichûbutsu) reveals a finely carved figure of the Thousand-armed Kannon (Senju Kannon) standing on a lotus pedestal. Brocade pouch.

A RARE AND EXQUISITE LACQUERED INDOOR ARCHERY SET.

Japan, 19th c. 34 × 9 × 11 cm (box), overall length of bow 88 cm.
Storage box with two drawers, decorated with wisteria in gold makie, contains six arrows in a stand and in an inlaid compartment a bow made of four detachable hardwood parts with finely worked wisteria metal fittings. Bow parts bearing gold lacquer signature ‘Fujiwara Kazutomo’, presumably the known indoor archery (yôkyû) player from Yûshima, Tokyo at the time. With inscribed wood box and enclosed document by Heisandô, dated 4th day 3rd month Shôwa 4 (1929).
