Japan, 19th c. Height 11 cm
Wood with black and gold lacquer, engraved metal fittings. The inside of the doors doors is painted with Bishamonten, the heavenly king of the north, also known as Tamonten, and a bodhisattva, also holding a small pagoda. Inside, Amida Buddha sits on a double lotus pedestal. Slight signs of age and wear.

AN IMPRESSIVE FIGURE OF UGA BENZAITEN

Japan, Edo period or earlier, total height 90 cm, figure 47 cm.
Wood with polychrome paint, the eyes are inlaid in glass. Metal jewellery with a torii above a pair of phoenixes crowns this eight-armed Benzaiten, a syncretic form which originates from the fusion of the serpent deity Ugajin with Benzaiten and is worshipped in Shintoism as well as Buddhism. The wish-fulfilling jewel (hôju) is in her left hand. Other attributes and a snake on her head are lost.

The eyes and byakugô (urna) are inlaid. Buddha Shakyamuni, sitting in serene meditation with half-closed eyelids, his hands held on the lap in zenjôin (meditation mudra). Dated Genroku 4 with cyclic dating kanoto hitsuji. Inscription at back and base refer to a Myôdenji [temple] and a high ranking monk. Traces of age.
