Wit, Frederick de.
Atlas. With coloured title page and 104 (3 folded) coloured copper maps.
Amsterdam, de Wit, [1680]. Large folio (55 × 34 cm). [1] leaf typographical index. Original publisher's vellum binding with rich gilt to spine and cover and gilt edges (dusty and somewhat bumped, front hinge chipped to extremeties).
Complete copy with all maps according to the index. ‘Some of the maps are by other authors [...] Several maps by De Wit are in the first state, without Privilegium’ (Koeman). - Contains world map, 4 continental maps, 29 maps of the Iberian Peninsula, France and Italy, 26 German regional maps, 10 of Scandinavia, Poland and Russia, 5 of Asia including Turkey and the Holy Land, 6 of south-east Europe, Greece and the Mediterranean, 4 of Great Britain and 19 of the Netherlands. The sheets from Hungary and neighbouring areas, the Peloponnese and Ireland are folded in; there are marginal views and plans of Sicily (5), the Peloponnese (14) and Crete (6). - Old foliation in pen upper right, strong oxidation of the green colouring to brownish throughout (with breakout in the cartouche of the Portugal map), several maps of about the first half with old reinforcements in the lower to middle fold, occasionally also small marginal backings, endpapers and the beautiful title page with tear of the lower outer corner, priming of the Lorraine map cancelled beyond the platemark, one fold of the large Hungary map torn at the lower edge. Overall, however, a beautiful atlas in the original colouring and binding.
