LOT COMPRISING THREE DISC-SHAPED MEDALLIONS - former Kofler-Truniger collection

Magna Graecia, probably 1st century BC (?).
Gold sheet with dot decoration in the form of rosettes. Two medallions with partly illegible Greek inscriptions. According to the index card, illegibly inscribed “Α(…) ΜIΔΟC(hic?) ΑΠΟΛΛωΝIOC ΕΥΦΡIΝ ΕΥΜΕΝΗC ΑΜΜωΝ” (?).
Ø (2×) 5.5 cm and 6 cm. Total weight 12.2 g.
Partially incomplete. Bent.

Provenance:
- Collection of Ernst and Marthe Kofler-Truniger (1903–1990 & 1918–1999), Lucerne before 1964 (inv. no. K719D, I-III).
- Swiss private collection, Lucerne, acquired from the above in ca. 1974.
- By inheritance in the same Swiss family collection, Lucerne.

Exhibited:
Kunsthaus Zurich, Collection E. and M. Kofler-Truniger, Lucerne, June 7–August 2, 1964, No. 418 (with exhibition catalog).

Literature:
Kunsthaus Zürich (ed.): Collection E. and M. Kofler-Truniger, Lucerne. Exhibition catalog, June 7–August 2, 1964, p. 43, No. 418 (without ill.).

According to the exhibition catalog of the Kunsthaus Zurich (1964), the date and location are uncertain. The catalog suggests Mansoura in Lower Egypt as the place of origin. Prof. Hafner transcribed the inscriptions based on Kofler-Truniger's index card. The names mentioned translate as Apollonios (?), Euphrin, Eumenes, and Ammon, which suggests a Greek-Hellenistic origin.
