ALABASTER FIGURE OF THE "IMMACULATE VIRGIN" ("VERGINE IMMACOLATA"),

late Baroque, Southern Italy, 19th century.
Finely carved alabaster. On a round base depicting the coats of arms of the Palma di Cesnola and Lawrence families. Some losses and restorations.
H figure 50 cm, with base 70 cm.

Provenance:
- According to historical sources, part of the collections of the Ordine religioso dell'Immacolata Concezione in Rivarolo Canavese in Piedmont.
- Presented to Luigi Palma di Cesnola on the occasion of the marriage of Alessandro Palma to Augusta Lawrence in 1879.
- By inheritance, in the same family and in Suisse romande.

L. Palma di Cesnola (Rivarolo Canavese 1832-1904 New York) was an Italian-American officer, diplomat, archaeologist, antiques collector and the first Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
