Recently rediscovered in a private collection, the present landscape, signed and dated 1633, is both in its composition and execution a characteristic work from the oeuvre of Jan van Goyen from the 1630s, when the artist broke away from the influence of his teacher Esaias van de Velde (1587 - 1630) and formed his own style with atmospheric dune landscapes.

Comparable landscapes from this period include "Dünenlandschaft mit Zaunstück" in the Schlossmuseum in Gotha (inv. no. 237, oil on panel, 30 x 50 cm, monogrammed and dated 1631, see Beck, Hans-Ulrich: Jan van Goyen 1596- 1656, Amsterdam 1973, vol. II, cat. no. 1092, p. 483) and "Sandige Landstrasse mit Wagenspuren" in the Yale University Art Gallery (inv. no. 1972.96, oil on panel, 31.4 x 53.3 cm, monogrammed and dated 1633, see ibid., cat. no. 1115, p. 490).
