Lot 229 - A187AS Art d'Asie : Himalaya, Chine - lundi, 03. décembre 2018, 13h00

A SPLENDID PAIR OF YANGZHOU STYLE LACQUER COMPOUND CABINETS.

China, late Ming dynasty, 78.5x42.5, overall height 173 cm.
Black lacquer inlaid with colourful stones and mother-of-pearl depicting a lake-side landscape. Incised bronze fittings.

Provenance: Purchased by Henry Wehrhane in Bejing in 1923, hence by descent. The seller Xu Shoushao declared that the cabinets had been made for emperor Chongzhen and been given to his grandfather Xu Tong (1819-1900) in the third year of Guangxu. He was then an advisor to the emperor. This statement survived in the form of an English translation done by J.C. Fitzhugh at the time (only as a copy).
