RARE BOTTLE

Du Paquier, ca. 1730-35.
Rare bottle, extensively decorated. Cork stoppers with a metal mount. No mark.
H 17.8 cm.

Provenance:
- Collection Dr. Siegfried Ducret, Zurich.
- By succession to Rosmarie Schmidt-Ducret, Binningen, estate.

This bottle is one of a series of items from the Viennese Manufactory that probably either stood in a pharmacy or served for storing wine or liqueur.
Animals were integrated in large numbers as sculptural elements in various Du Paquier forms. They are often East Asian-inspired dragons, lions, panthers, salamanders, or eagles, as well as other birds that form the finial and handle or were used as relief decoration like in the model on offer.

Comparative pieces: M. Chilton-C. Lehner-Jobst, Fired by Passion. Barockes Wiener Porzellan der Manufaktur Claudius Innocentius Du Paquier, 2009, Vol. 3, Cat. Nos. 122-130; tea caddy with comparable square feet and opening (formerly Ducret Collection, in the Metropolitan Museum New York since 1998 (Inventory No. 1998.528); clock case with applied seated lions at Hayward, Victoria & Albert Museum, 1952, Table 11; teapot with relief overlays at Bednarcyk, 1994, Ill. 1.
